Lesson: How Do You Cut Your Sandwich?

Introduction Narrative:

Let’s begin with a simple question: How do you cut your sandwich?

Do you cut it into two rectangles, diagonally into two triangles, or not at all? Maybe you have a unique method. At first glance, this might seem like a trivial question, but it’s an entry point to something much deeper.

Do you cut your sandwich down the middle to get two rectangles? Or you could cut it diagonally to make two triangles. Some of you might not cut it, or you have a unique way! Now, this seems like a simple question. But stay with me.

I want you to think about why you cut your sandwich as you do. Go ahead and write down three reasons. Don’t overthink it—just jot down the first things that come to mind. Maybe it’s habit, convenience, or just how you learned to do it. And here’s a follow-up question: can you connect any of those reasons to a memory, a family tradition, or maybe even a specific person who influenced you?

Here’s an example: I always cut my sandwiches diagonally because that’s how my mom did it. But when I got married, I discovered my spouse’s family cut theirs differently. That got me thinking: Why was I so attached to triangles versus rectangles?
